Amherst Firefighters Union Calls For More Staffing After Apartment Fire

The Amherst Firefighters Union is calling for more staffing after last week's massive apartment fire.

The union says the fire "tested the limits" of the department with a response capacity that was far below national standards for a fire that size.

They're urging the town to hire 18 additional career firefighters to bring the department's staffing levels up to the national average.

The union said "a significant and immediate increase in staffing is the only way to ensure the safety standards our community deserves."

Meantime, crews have been back at the Olympia Place site to put down hot-spots.

No cause has yet been determined.
