DA's Office Declines To Seek Retrial In Overturned Murder Case

The Hampden District Attorney's Office will not seek a retrial for a man who was released from prison last month after his 1985 murder conviction was overturned.

DA Anthony Gulluni said the evidence against Edward Wright remains strong, but they cannot reconstruct a trial that happened 40 years ago.

Wright spent four decades behind bars for the murder of 24-year-old Penny Anderson before a judge ruled in April the prosecution withheld significant evidence.

Gulluni said Wright received a fair trial, and his office is "deeply troubled" by the judge's decision.
