Massachusetts Senate Approves Bill Banning Cell Phones In Schools

The state Senate has approved a bill that would ban students from having cell phones in public schools.

The bill would also ban smart watches and tablets from schools, with the goal of improving educational outcomes.

The proposal has the support of Governor Maura Healey and the state's two largest teachers unions, but apparently it will not be going anywhere in the House.

Speaker Ron Mariano says he recognizes phones are a distraction, but also understands the concerns of parents worried about reaching their kids during an emergency.
