Former Hasbro CEO, Alan Hessenfeld Passes Away

The former CEO of Hasbro has died at the age of 76.

Alan Hassenfeld died in his sleep earlier this week.

Under his leadership, Hasbro was the second largest toy maker in the world, second only to Mattel.

Although he was born in Providence, the iconic businessman had ties to western Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Deerfield Academy.

After his graduation in 1970 from the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the family business which was foinded by his grandfather back in 1923 and move up the ranks.

It was in 1984 and was named Chairman and CEO in 1989 when his brother Stephen passed away.

Governor Dan McKee said of the passing:

“Alan Hassenfeld was a pillar of the Rhode Island community, known not just for his visionary leadership at Hasbro but for a life defined by generosity. Through his deep commitment to philanthropy, Alan championed causes that improved the lives of so many children and families across our state. His legacy will live on for generations to come.

“Our hearts are with the Hassenfeld family during this difficult time.”

Mayor Brett Smiley said Hassenfeld was " a trusted leader, philanthropist and tremendous force for change. Alan's impact on Rhode Island will be felt for generations."

Funeral services have not been announced.
